Isochronism

There are many steps to ensure precision in timekeeping and every link in the chain from the power supply to the ticking balance plays a part. The consistency of the power transmission from the watches barrel through to the isochronism of the balance wheel all plays a part.

The word isochronism is relevant to understanding timekeeping, it means; occurring in equal periods of time, ie when a pendulum on a clock or balance wheel in a watch is isochronous, their duration is independent of their amplitude. Whether the swing or oscillation of the pendulum or balance wheel is large or small the time taken for one complete cycle remains the same.
