Beginning from a technical background, Bertrand Savary found his place in the commercial side of watchmaking where he has stayed and is now veteran in the industry.
1. Describe briefly your childhood.
I am born and raised in Fribourg (Switzerland). I spent my childhood playing soccer and skying.
2. As a child did you have any driving ambition?
I dreamt of becoming professional soccer player, my idols were Maradona, Van Basten…. but I realize around 16-18 years old that it would remain a dream.
3. What is your first significant memory as a child?
Playing with my 12 cousins ever weekend on my grandfather farm.
4. Have you ever had another profession?
I have spent all my career in the watch industry but I have had several jobs… Right after graduating my engineer diploma, I started working for Richemont Customer Service, we were implementing the customer service around the world, it was a fantastic experience for a young guy without any experience.
5. What made you decide to go in the direction you are currently in?
I think it came naturally with my character, I made the shift from technical to a commercial activity where I feel more at my home…
6. What’s the worst job you’ve had to do?
Since I was 14 years old I have been working every summer holidays to have some pocket money. I have worked in a beer factory, in construction, as a landscaper… I learned the value of money and it also convince me that having a University degree will allow me to have a comfortable job.
7. What’s been the hardest moment in your life so far, and how did you overcome it?
Losing family and friends is certainly the hardest moment.
8. Who has had the strongest influence on you?
Personally my wife. Professionally I tried to pick up the best from all my boss’ but if I have to named one it will be Mr Hayek Senior for his vision, his capacity to see 10 years ahead and his humor.
9. What are you most proud of?
My wife and my twins girls. Also to not forget who you are and where you come from.
10. What advice would you give to a 20 something someone thinking of taking a similar path as you?
To enjoy the path, to enjoy what they are doing and to not hesitate to go to another company/department if they feel stuck or if they are not learning anything. We spend 10 hours a day in our jobs so you have to like it.
11. Name three things on your bucket list.
Skydiving and learn surfing
Retire before 60 years old in Spain or Portugal to enjoy the sea, the food, the wine
Have more time to spend with my family
12. Where do you think the industry is going to be in 10 years time.
It will certainly have a readjustment. I hope that the Swiss watch industry will be more transparent and when Swiss made and in-house movement marketing terms are used they will be respected.
